Science fiction is not always my native territory, but Universe of Lost Messages drew me in through exactly the qualities I value most in any novel: precise character work, social texture, and a romance that develops with satisfying deliberateness.
Stilson’s future world is richly rendered — the class dynamics between Chav and Elite, the Charismites with their extraordinary gifts, the political machinations of The Fist — and the alternating narrators each bring genuine individuality to their sections. The metaverse of floating lost messages is an elegant central invention.
Jonathan Oliver has called Stilson “one of the very best of new SF writers.” Having read this, I am inclined to agree.
